Non-Parametric, Unconditional Quantile Estimation of Efficiency in Microfinance Institutions
نویسنده
چکیده
We apply the non-parametric, unconditional, hyperbolic order- quantile estimator to appraise the relative efficiency of Microfinance Institutions in Africa in terms of outreach. Our purpose is to verify if these institutions, which must constantly try to strike a compromise between their social role and financial sustainability are operationally efficient. Using data on African MFIs extracted from the Microfinance Information eXchange (MIX) database and covering the 2004 to 2006 periods, we find that more efficient MFIs are also the most profitable. This result is in line with the view that social performance is not in contradiction with the pursuit of excellent financial performance. Our results also show that large MFIs in terms of asset and those charging the highest fees are not necessarily the most efficient. Keywords—Data envelopment analysis, microfinance institutions, quantile estimation of efficiency, social and financial performance.

Robust Non-parametric Quantile Estimation of Efficiency and Productivity Change in U.S. Commercial Banking, 1985–2004
This paper uses a new non-parametric, unconditional, hyperbolic order-α quantile estimator to construct a hyperbolic version of the Malmquist index. Unlike traditional non-parametric efficiency estimators, the new estimator is both robust to data outliers and has a root-n convergence rate. We use this estimator to examine changes in the efficiency and productivity of U.S. banks between 1985 and...

This study evaluates the impact of privatisation on efficiency and productivity of the Pakistani cement industry. To address some of the serious concerns about the problem of dimension and outlier, we use a newly developed unconditional hyperbolic α-quantile estimator of Wheelock and Wilson to estimate efficiency (Wheelock DC, Wilson PW. Non-parametric, unconditional quantile estimation for eff...

Microfinance has been developed as alternative solution for global poverty alleviation effort in the last 30 years. Microfinance institution (MFI) has unique characteristic wherein they face double bottom line objectives of outreach to the poor and financial sustainability. This study proposes a two-stage analysis to measure Islamic Microfinance institutions (IMFIs) performance by comparing the...
متن کاملMicrofinance Institutions’ Operational Infrastructure in India: Assessing the Efficiencies through OLS Model
This study attempts to examine the operational efficiency of thirty-two microfinance institutions in India. Operational efficiency in microfinance institutions refers to how well microfinance institutions allocate the input resources. Since the study is an exploratory nature, therefore, the data are collected from mix market on annual basis. It covers the seven-year period ranging from 2005-06 ...
متن کاملCredit Scoring Models for a Tunisian Microfinance Institution: Comparison between Artificial Neural Network and Logistic Regression
This paper compares, for a microfinance institution, the performance of two individual classification models: Logistic Regression (Logit) and Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Network (MLP), to evaluate the credit risk problem and discriminate good creditors from bad ones. Credit scoring systems are currently in common use by numerous financial institutions worldwide. However, credit scoring using ...
